THE ROLE OF CERAMIDES IN HEALTHY SKIN

When it comes to skincare, there are the familiar “big names” —retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. But what if we told you there’s an unsung hero quietly working behind the scenes, playing a starring role in keeping your skin smooth, hydrated, and resilient? Enter the room: ceramides, the top secret agents of the epidermis. These mighty molecules might not get the same spotlight, but they’re essential for maintaining that glowing, healthy complexion we all strive for. Ready to uncover the mystery behind ceramides and their newer plant sources? Let’s dive in!
CERAMIDES THE ESSENTIAL FOUNDATION FOR SKIN CELLS
Ceramides are a type of lipid, specifically sphingolipids, that are naturally present in high concentrations within the stratum corneum. The SC is the outermost layer of the skin, containing protein and lipid rich cells called keratinocytes. These are the cells you visibly see everyday. Ceramides make up HALF of the lipid content in the stratum corneum which significantly contributes to the protective barrier function of skin. Without the right ratio the skin can be severly compromised. Composition can vary depending on the differentiation stage of the keratinocyte, health of the skin, and the aggressors it comes into contact with according to PUBMED. Maintaining the 50% cermaide content of the skin is vital for maintaining for protection, preventing moisture loss, and ensuring the overall integrity of the skin. Think of it as the super sealant armor for your skin.

When the skin's ceramide levels are low, the barrier function becomes compromised. This can lead to various skin issues, including dryness, irritation, sensitivity, and even conditions such as eczema and psoriasis Science Direct. Many treatments for these skin diseases call for a temperary occlusive that is petroleum based (petrolatum jelly as an example) to reseal the skin temperarily. We found ceramides to be more effective immediately as an occlusive and long term as it replenishes lost reservoirs of cermides with each use.
PLANT VS ANIMAL ORIGIN
Traditionally, ceramides used in skincare products have been derived from animal sources. These ceramides can be extracted from cows other or harvested from sheep’s sebum by pressing wool (lanolin). The use of animal-derived ceramides raises several concerns about treatment of animals, the contamination of pesticides and allergins (depending on harvest area), and the compatibility of it’s use on human skin.
This is where phytoceramides come into play. Phytoceramides are plant-derived dupes mimicking the skin’s composition, typically extracted from sources like wheat, rice, or sweet potatoes acting as a plant-based alternative.
Phytoceramides are not only cruelty-free but also better for those with sensitive skin, as they are great for sensitive skin and unlikely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
DEW DIFFERENCE FOR PYTOCERAMIDES
Given their crucial role in maintaining skin health, incorporating phytoceramides into your skincare routine can be highly beneficial. Phytoceramides are available in various forms, but DEW MIGHTY finds them best suited in a bar.
Our Phytosterol is a triple plant sourced ester technology that we use which mimics the functionality of ceramides with great adhesion and water binding to the skin. It has similar comparative studies to the benefits of lanolin but is vegan. It is tested for long term moisture retention, reduction of transepidermal water loss, and compatibility with the skin to create a unique protective shield.
These products are particularly useful for anyone with dry, sensitive, or aging skin, as they help restore the lipid barrier and improve moisture retention. We have two products that utilize high levels of ceramides NOVA for locing in moisture while rejuvenating the skin to prevent the tell tale “molting” of vitamin A and OASIS our mighty skin armor that combats all climate extremse

REPLENISH WITH CERAMIDES FOR HEALTHIER SKIN
Ceramides are essential building blocks to having strong and resilient skin. Now that there are advanced technologies in vegan plant based phytoceramides DEW skincare offers the same replenishment without animal or petroleum derived ingredients. It was important to us to keep all the benefits of traditional ceramides—such as strengthening the skin barrier, locking in moisture, and enhancing skin resilience—without the animal or unsustainable sourcing. Based from plants our we are able to support vegan, cruelty-free, and petrol free but suitable for all skin types. They are the perfect example of how modern skincare can be both effective and aligned with the values of a conscientious consumer.
